MSU Joins National Consortium for Biomedical Scientists (November 2009) Montana State University has joined a national consortium, called eagle-i, that will help biomedical scientists accelerate their research by sharing resources. Brian Bothner, MSU Biochemist, Awarded NIH Grant with Assistance from INBRE-Funded Undergraduate Researcher Shannon Kruse (10/2009) The National Institutes of Health awarded Brian Bothner a 1.2M four-year grant to understand how viruses assemble themselves, enter cells and seize control. Cristi Hunnes, Rocky Mountain College Professor of Chemistry, Receives Recognition for Partnerships with Tribal Colleges (9/2009) Dr. Cristi Hunnes receives recognition for her work in acquiring a nuclear resonance magnetic spectrometer for the college and developing partnerships with the state's tribal colleges. Hunnes obtained funds to train tribal college faculty and students in the use of the spectrometer and to enable them to access the equipment.
Jessi Smith, MSU Associate Professor of Social Psychology and MT INBRE Researcher, Receives NSF Grant (8/2009) Dr. Jessi Smith has been awarded an NSF grant to study how Native American men and women differentially negotiate cultural expectations as well as social support structures to persist in STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Math) disciplines.
MSU Nursing Faculty Sandra Kuntz is a 2009 Robert Wood Johnson Nurse Faculty Scholar (6/2009) Dr. Sandra Kuntz is one of 15 Robert Wood Johnson Nurse Faculty Scholars Program recipients for 2009. With INBRE funding, Dr. Kuntz is studying methylmercury risk and awareness in American Indian women. With this additional award, Dr. Kuntz will be launching the methylmercury project on the Fort Peck Reservation.

Grant Hokit, Associate Professor of Biology at Carroll College and MT INBRE Researcher, Receives Cargill Award (6/2009) Dr. Grant Hokit, Associate Professor of Biology at Carroll College, is the recipient of a five-year award from the Margaret A. Cargill Foundation to support student researchers studying the distribution of West Nile Virus in Montana. Environmental studies major Jason Larsen contributed to the proposal and will use the funding to support his undergraduate thesis research. Larsen will receive additional support in his research with a $1000 award from the Montana Association of Geographic Information Professionals.
Molecular Bioscience Fellow Wins $90K NSF Graduate Research Fellowship (5/2009) Janice Lucon, a graduate student in inorganic chemistry and an MSU Molecular Bioscience Fellow working in Trevor Douglas' laboratory, has received a Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation.
INBRE graduate student researcher receives prestigious EPA Star Fellowship (10/2008) Crystal Richards, a microbiology graduate student, has received a fellowship from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of its Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program.
